How to Get Hex File from Qmk Configurator?

There is no one-click solution to getting a hex file from the Qmk Configurator. You will need to use the “Export” button in the upper-right corner of the screen and then select the “Hex” option from the drop-down menu. This will download a zip file containing your hex file.

  • Go to the Qmk Configurator website
  • Enter your keyboard’s model in the “Keyboard” drop-down menu
  • Select the appropriate keymap from the “Keymap” drop-down menu
  • Make any other desired changes in the configurator, such as changing keycodes or enabling macros
  • When you are finished making changes, click the “Compile” button at the bottom of the page
  • A new page will open with a download link for your hex file; click this link to download it to your computer

How Do I Use Qmk Configurator?

If you want to use QMK configurator, the first thing you need to do is visit the website at Once there, you’ll need to create an account and log in. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be brought to the main page of the configurator.

On the left side of the page, there’s a list of all the different keyboard layouts that are available. Find the one that matches your keyboard and click on it. On the right side of the page, there’s a list of all the different keycodes that are available.

Find the ones that you want to use and drag them onto your keyboard layout. You can also change the default layer by clicking on the “Layer 1” button above your keyboard layout and selecting a new layer from the drop-down menu. Once you’re happy with your changes, click on the “Compile” button at the bottom of the page and download your firmware file.

Then follow instructions from your manufacturer on how to flash it onto your keyboard!

How Do I Compile My Qmk Firmware?

Assuming you have downloaded and installed the QMK Toolbox, open it and you should see something like this: ![]( If not, click the “Select” button and find your qmk_firmware folder.

Then, click the “Load” button. Now we need to select our keyboard from the dropdown menu. I’m going to use the Planck EZ as an example here since that’s what I have handy, but the process is similar for other keyboards.

With the keyboard selected, go ahead and click on the keymap you want to compile in the left pane. In my case, I’m going to use the default “qmk_firmware” keymap. Yours may look different depending on which keyboard you’re using and which keymaps you have available.

![]( With your keymap loaded, it’s time to compile! Click on the “Compile” button in the lower right corner of the window and wait a few seconds for QMK Toolbox to do its thing.

How to Flash Qmk Firmware?

If you’re looking to flash QMK firmware, there are a few things you’ll need to do first. Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need to do: 1. Download the QMK firmware file from the official QMK website.

2. Extract the downloaded ZIP file and navigate to the “qmk_firmware” folder. 3. In the “qmk_firmware” folder, open up the “keyboards” folder and then open up the folder for your keyboard model (for example, if you have a Planck EZ, you would open up the “planck” folder). 4. Copy over the default keymap file from within your keyboard’s directory (for example, for a Planck EZ, this would be the “default-layout” file) into a new text document on your computer.

This will be your starting point for creating your custom keymap. 5. Make any desired changes to your custom keymap file and save it with a new name (for example, “my-custom-layout”). Note that all changes must be made in HEXadecimal format.

6. Navigate back to the “qmk_firmware” directory and open up the “docs” folder. Within this folder, open up the “getting_started_windows” or “getting_started_macOS” guide (depending on which operating system you’re using), and follow all instructions until you reach the section titled “Compiling Your Firmware”. At this point, continue following these instructions but use your custom keymap file in place of the default one when prompted (for example, when running make planck/ez:default:flash in Windows Command Prompt, replace default with my-custom-layout).

If everything goes according to plan, your firmware should now be successfully flashed!
